Toast to the Bride and Groom

Posted at 17:55:07 on 26/11/2002.
by Debs
fathersspeech
Before I commence my very important task of extolling the virtues and delights of our darling daughter Deborah, I would like to extend a very warm welcome to you all on this happy occasion, especially to those of you who have traveled from far flung parts of the world, Australia, Singapore, Spain, France, Northern Ireland, Isle of Skye, Scotland and Wales. Jane and I would also like to welcome Alasdair and his family into our family.
The easiest way for me to cover all Debs obvious charms and talents is to use the letters of her name as an ‘aide memoire’ for her ageing father.
D is obviously for Deborah our darling youngest child, who has delighted and tormented us over the past years.
E reminds me of her enthusiasm, energy and the encouragement she gives to others, and as can be seen by all today, her elegance.
B Beautiful and bossy in equal amounts and even brainy as her academic achievements at Durham and the College of Law in York show.
O is for oarswoman to remind us of her role as a crew member in the Hatfield women’s boat, and as the President of Durham University Women’s Rowing Club. We are pleased to have crew members with us today
R is to remind me that she is reliable, resolute in adversity and a good friend to have on your team or in your boat.
A She is always there when needed to encourage, cajole and support
H is for the happiness that will be hers with Al by her side.
In conclusion I ask you all to rise and toast the Health And Happiness of the Bride and Groom
DEBS and AL

EXTRACT FROM LES MISERABLES BY VICTOR HUGO
read by Victoria Goodman

YOU CAN GIVE WITHOUT LOVING,

BUT YOU CAN NEVER LOVE WITHOUT GIVING.

THE GREAT ACTS OF LOVE ARE DONE BY THOSE WHO

ARE HABITUALLY PERFORMING SMALL ACTS OF

KINDNESS. WE PARDON TO THE EXTENT THAT WE

LOVE. LOVE IS KNOWING THAT EVEN WHEN YOU ARE

ALONE, YOU WILL NEVER BE LONELY AGAIN. AND

GREAT HAPPINESS OF LIFE IS THE CONVICTION THAT

WE ARE LOVED. LOVED FOR OURSELVES. AND EVEN

LOVED IN SPITE OF OURSELVES.

WHAT COULD BE MORE SWEET THAN TO LIVE WITH ONE

TO WHOM YOU ARE UNITED IN BODY AND MIND, WHO

TALKS WITH YOU IN SECRET AFFECTION, AND TO WHOM

YOU HAVE COMMITTED ALL YOUR FAITH AND YOUR

FORTUNE? WHAT IN ALL NATURE IS LOVELIER?

YOU ARE BOUND TO FRIENDS IN AFFECTION. HOW MUCH

MORE ARE YOU BOUND TO A HUSBAND OR WIFE IN THE

HIGHEST LOVE, WITH UNION OF THE BODY, THE BOND OF

MUTUAL VOWS AND THE SHARING OF YOUR PROPERTY!.....

NOTHING IS MORE SAFE, TRANQUIL, PLEASANT AND LOVING

THAN MARRIAGE
